If you travel to the Dominican Republic, I highly recommend venturing beyond the most touristy areas like Punta Cana. Of course, I recommend visiting Punta Cana, but I assure you that you will find wonderful places outside of it, from virgin or semi-virgin islands and beaches to marvelous rivers and the lesser-known south of the Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a privileged destination, full of contrasts and natural wonders. From its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters to its green mountains and historic cities, this country has something for everyone. With a warm and hospitable climate year-round, it is the perfect place for an unforgettable vacation.

República Dominicana: Un Paraíso
Los Patos, Barahona

I have been blessed to live in different parts of the Dominican Republic, including the south of the country, and I have been fascinated by its beauty. Sometimes I wonder if Dominicans know the blessing they have or if the beauty is so normal to their eyes that they no longer see it. If you come to the Dominican Republic and want to venture beyond Punta Cana, I recommend it 100%. In this article, we will only touch on a small fraction of the wonders of the Dominican Republic, but it will be a good start.

Beaches of the South of the Dominican Republic

The south of the Dominican Republic offers some of the most spectacular and lesser-known beaches in the country. Here, you will find tranquility, natural beauty, and an authentic experience away from mass tourism.

Bahía de las Águilas: Un Paraíso Virgen

Bahia de las Aguilas

Bahía de las Águilas, located in the province of Pedernales, is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. With its crystal-clear waters and white sand, it is an ideal destination for those seeking a pure connection with nature.

If you want to disconnect from everything, this is the beach you are looking for. There are a couple of beachfront hotels just outside the park, so you will be very close to Bahía de las Águilas, which is a protected area. These hotels offer the concept of "Glam Camping," a highly recommended experience and a must if you like adventure with comfort like me. I stayed at Eco del Mar, but there are other equally recommended options.

And if I may say so, if I had to rank my favorite beaches in the Dominican Republic, this one would easily be in the top 3, vying for the first place.

Playa de los Patos: Beauty and Adventure

Los Patos de Barahona

Playa de los Patos, in the province of Barahona, is famous for its impressive landscape and its freshwater river that flows into the sea. It is a perfect place to enjoy both the sea and a refreshing bath in the river. Although we are not discussing rivers in this article, remember that the country is full of them, and it is also an experience you must have if you visit us.

This beach has the peculiarity of having pebbles instead of sand. The first time I visited, it was something that caught my attention powerfully. If you enter the sea, be careful as it can have strong waves, so most visitors enjoy the river more.

Although the south of the Dominican Republic is less developed than the rest of the country, I truly believe it is a place worth visiting, and it can easily enchant you as it did me. Don't forget to buy your Larimar souvenirs.

Other Highlighted Beaches in the South:

  • Playa San Rafael
  • Playa Paraíso

Mountain Tourism: Constanza and Jarabacoa

Jarabacoa-Republica-Dominicana

If you prefer the fresh mountain air, Constanza and Jarabacoa will surprise you with their mountainous landscapes and pleasant climate. These regions are perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and rafting.

I had the opportunity to live in Jarabacoa for three years, and I can't express how beautiful and tranquil it is. It has beautiful riverside hotels, mainly adventure activities, and a cool climate most of the year. The general atmosphere is relaxed, and everyone is super friendly. Visit La Tinaja for fresh bread and sweets.

Highlighted Activities:

  • Hiking on Pico Duarte
  • Rafting on the Yaque del Norte River

The Colonial City of Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is a city rich in history and culture. The Colonial City, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is home to over 300 historical monuments, including the first cathedral and the first hospital in the Americas.

Santo Domingo is the most chaotic city in the Dominican Republic, but it strangely has its charm in that chaos. Now I miss being stuck in traffic (just kidding). I also lived in Santo Domingo for about two years, and I truly miss it, especially the Colonial Zone, as I tend to be the kind of person who wonders about the history and events that happened in those beautiful buildings. Awakening my curiosity about other times, very close to the Colonial Zone, you will find the handicraft market to buy all your souvenirs at an excellent price.

The Rich Dominican Culture

Music and Dance: The Soul of the Caribbean

Cultura y Comunidad Dominicana Alcazar de Colon de Cerca

Music and dance are the heart of Dominican culture. Merengue and bachata, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, are the rhythms that animate every party and celebration in the country.

Music is another thing I adore about the Dominican Republic. A Dominican can be broke and depressed, but at the sound of the first bachata, they forget and start to enjoy. And as Dominicans say, "they don't mind."

Cultural Events:

  • Merengue Festival
  • Dominican Carnival

Gastronomy: Authentic Flavors

Dominican gastronomy reflects its rich cultural heritage, combining Taíno, African, and European influences. Dishes like sancocho, the Dominican flag, and mangú are a must for any visitor.

Typical Dishes:

  • Sancocho
  • Mangú with Los Tres Golpes
  • Mofongo

Los tres Golpes Desayuno Dominicano
