Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is not just a common tourist destination but also a historical treasure that transports us to the colonial past of America. On this tour, we will explore the most fascinating corners of the Colonial City, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

History of Santo Domingo

To truly understand the essence of Santo Domingo, it is crucial to immerse yourself in its rich history. Founded in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of Christopher Columbus, the city became the first capital of the New World. Here, every street tells a story, and each colonial building whispers secrets of the past.

I have always loved historical buildings, and this city is full of them. I often wonder, "What if walls could talk?" What stories from the past could they tell?

Dominican Culture

Dominican culture is rich and multifaceted, with influences from various civilizations that have mixed over the centuries. Let's explore some of these key influences.

The Colonial Legacy

The colonial legacy is reflected in every corner of the city, from the majestic Cathedral of America with a blend of Gothic and Plateresque elements, featuring a beautiful Gothic-style ceiling. I remember the first time I entered, I couldn't stop admiring the ceiling. This combination of architectural styles reflects the rich history and the influence of various eras on the construction of this important religious monument in America.

Make sure your itinerary includes visits to historical fortresses like the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus' family. This palace is a significant historical monument and one of the most popular museums in the Colonial City, known for its Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

The Colonial City of Santo Domingo is a true cultural treasure. Its cobblestone streets and colorful facades will transport you to another era. Don't miss the Plaza de España, Parque Colón, and Calle Las Damas, the first paved street on the American continent.

Iconic Monuments

Among the most notable monuments are the Ozama Fortress, an impressive defensive structure dating from the 16th century, and the Columbus Lighthouse, a cross-shaped monument that commemorates the final resting place of Christopher Columbus.

Local Cuisine

A visit to Santo Domingo wouldn't be complete without trying its delicious cuisine. From traditional dishes like mofongo and sancocho to local delicacies like coconut sweets and fresh fruit, Dominican food will delight your palate.

Recommended Restaurants

Don't miss the chance to taste the local cuisine at iconic restaurants such as El Conuco, La Briciola, and Pat’e Palo, and my personal favorite, Buche Perico, with an impressive garden inside a colonial building. These places offer an authentic Dominican culinary experience you won't want to miss.

Art and Culture

Santo Domingo is a hub of art and culture. From museums that tell the country's history to contemporary art galleries, the city offers a wide range of cultural experiences for all tastes.

Museums and Galleries

Nightlife

After a day full of exploration, the fun doesn't end when the sun sets. Santo Domingo comes alive at night, with a lively nightlife scene that offers everything from bars and nightclubs to live music shows.

Entertainment Places

Enjoy an unforgettable night in the Colonial Zone, where you'll find a wide variety of bars and nightclubs. You can also head to the Malecón, a seaside promenade lined with bars and restaurants overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Where to Stay

Something you should know is that the city's traffic can be very heavy at any time, so if your goal is to visit the Colonial Zone, it's better to stay there. Or at least in a hotel that is nearby or on the Malecón so that you can get out more quickly, since no one wants to waste their precious vacation time stuck in traffic. The hotels I can recommend that are in the Colonial Zone are:

  • Nicolas de Ovando: which is also located in a wonderful colonial mansion and has a very varied and delicious breakfast.
  • Novus Plaza: Located one street from the cathedral, the rooms are quite comfortable, the staff is very friendly, and the breakfast is equally delicious.
  • Caribe Colonial: This hotel is not suitable for claustrophobic people since it is in an old building and they had to use each space in the smartest way possible, and its elevator is extremely small. Two people in the elevator with luggage, and it's already full. Nevertheless, the rooms are small but comfortable, the breakfast is very tasty, and the staff very friendly. Keep in mind that if you stay here, it has a very small parking lot. But it has a nice terrace on the top floor with an incredible view of the Colonial Zone.
  • Note: It might sound like a commercial for that chain, but the company I worked for had a special rate with this chain.

Don’t forget that, just across the bridge, right in front of the Colonial Zone, there are apartments that are often rented out on Airbnb. They are small, but they make magic with the space. The following pictures are from one of those places which I also loved for the view.

Travel Tips

Before embarking on this exciting adventure, here are some practical tips to make your trip even more enjoyable:

  • Weather : Santo Domingo has a tropical climate, so be sure to wear light clothing and sunscreen.
  • Transport : Explore the city on foot or by public transport to immerse yourself in authentic Dominican life.
  • Safety: Always keep your belongings safe and follow local recommendations to ensure a secure experience. For travel and tours, I recommend looking for an anti-theft bag on places like Amazon, which are also usually waterproof, useful for the Caribbean climate.
  • Shopping: If you are interested in buying handicrafts or jewelry with Larimar (a semi-precious stone found exclusively in the Dominican Republic), it is best to head to craft markets, as if you buy them in shopping centers or even some shops in the Colonial Zone, they will always be priced much higher than their value.
